December 21, 2024
Spelling tests are an essential part of expanding a student鈥檚 vocabulary. These tests not only determine how well a student can spell, but also, they help instructors gauge a student鈥檚 understanding and progress throughout the academic year. Spelling tests also for the long term. Who knew just a few, simple words could reveal so much? Especially in the fourth grade, students are introduced to more challenging 4th grade spelling words and concepts which help prepare them for their future beyond elementary school. In this case, spelling words may not be as straightforward and rely on the student鈥檚 ability to memorize and recite.
In this article, we will provide a list of 4h grade spelling words which are separated by category, or subject. It can be a helpful strategy to use spelling words which are relevant to the current lesson plan. That way, students can not only have a better understanding of the vocabulary associated with the lesson but also the meaning of the term itself.
If the words are meaningful to students, instead of a randomized list, then they may relate to the spelling tests easier and make more sense of them. For this reason, we have divided this article into several sections which may correspond with your lesson planning:
- Literature
- Mathematics
- Science
- Sight Words
- Skill Words
These skill words test specific benchmarks that a fourth-grade student should be able to meet on their spelling test. Skill words are trickier to master but establish a useful foundation for spelling later in life. But, we鈥檒l explain these skill words in more detail below.

During this time, preparing a list of spelling words based on the assigned reading is a good way to blend the curriculum with the student鈥檚 spelling abilities.
Below are a few common titles that are typically assigned to fourth grade students. These words are associated with the book鈥攂oth in its ideas and its themes. However, you may tailor your own spelling list to the book of your choosing that fits with your current 4th grade curriculum.
Plus, assigning the spelling list in advance, while students are reading the book, is also a good way to help them practice and study. That way, while reading, students may come to better recognize these words and pay more attention to them and their meanings.

4th Grade Spelling Words 鈥 Skill Words
At the fourth-grade level, students learn how to spell complex words and learn even more grammatical patterns. Here are some skillsets that fourth graders should be familiar with:
Contractions
Word contractions are introduced at this stage. How do you spell a word when it鈥檚 abbreviated? Adding in the apostrophe is a skill that needs developing at this stage. Additionally, students learn which two words the contraction signifies.
For example: Don鈥檛 = Do Not
Double Letters
Building on the knowledge from the 3rd grade spelling words, students can continue to learn more about double letters in words. These double letters are often silent, so they can be trickier to get a hold of.

-tion
Additionally, students also learn the suffix ending, 鈥渢ion.鈥 Another common word ending which appears regularly but can sound deceiving. For instance, the 鈥渢鈥 can sound silent.
