From Tiger Woods at Stanford to Jon Rahm at Arizona State, collegiate powerhouse programs have a long history of developing the game’s future stars. Which college golf teams offer the best combination of championship pedigree, top-tier coaching, and elite facilities all depends on the eye of the beholder.

Some programs have a history of winning NCAA championships while others have produced a laundry list of PGA and LPGA stars. Some new faces are quickly emerging as powerhouses, climbing the rankings with elite recruiting classes and top-tier facilities.

So which college programs stand out above the rest? From historical juggernauts to hidden gems, these 25 schools set the standard for excellence in collegiate golf.

25. University of Virginia

• NCAA Championships: 0
• Notable Alumni: Lauren Coughlin, Donna Andrews, Denny McCarthy, and Ben Kohles
• Additional Highlights: While the Cavaliers have never won an NCAA championship, they’ve steadily built a nationally-ranked program with excellent coaching and recruiting. Their men’s and women’s teams are consistently among the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

24. Vanderbilt University

• NCAA Championships: 0
• Notable Alumni: Brandt Snedeker and Luke List
• Additional Highlights: The Commodores are an up-and-coming college golf program. In 2024, the university unveiled an expanded 12,000-square-foot Golf House at the impressive Vanderbilt Legends Club, which enhances training and support for both the men’s and women’s teams.

23. Northwestern University

• NCAA Championships: 0
• Notable Alumni: Matt Fitzpatrick, Luke Donald, and Elizabeth Szokol
• Additional Highlights: Playing out of The Glen Club in Chicago, the Wildcats are consistently a competitive program. Northwestern has produced top professional players and draws elite student-athletes.

The men’s golf team has won eight Big Ten Conference championships and has twice placed second in the NCAA Championships (1939 & 1945).

22. University of Illinois

• NCAA Championships: 0 (runner-up finish in 2013 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Thomas Pieters, Steve Stricker, and Thomas Detry
• Additional Highlights: A powerful force in the Big Ten, the Fighting Illini consistently rank among the best college golf programs nationally.

The 23rd-ranked player in the world – Thomas Detry – golfed for Illinois as recently as 2016.

21. University of North Carolina

• NCAA Championships: 0
• Notable Alumni: Davis Love III, Raymond Floyd, and Meaghan Francella
• Additional Highlights: Consistently ranked among the top five public universities, the Tar Heels’ men’s team won the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference title, which is one of 12 ACC team titles in program history.

Davis Love III is probably the most well-known Tar Heel alumni. He was ranked as top 10 golfer for more than 450 weeks and won the 1997 PGA Championship.

20. University of Washington

• NCAA Championships: 1 (2016 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Brock Mackenzie, Nick Taylor, Joel Dahmen, and Dodie Mazzuca
• Additional Highlights: The Huskies’ women’s team won a national championship in 2016, and both the women’s and men’s college golf programs were highly competitive in the now-defunct Pac-12 Conference.

Only time will tell whether Washington can compete in the Big Ten, but UW provides an excellent training environment with access to top-tier golf courses and coaching.

19. University of Oregon

• NCAA Championships: 1 (2016 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Wyndham Clark and Ben Crane
• Additional Highlights: The Ducks’ 2016 championship marked their arrival as a top contender in college golf and they remain highly competitive. Their home course, Eugene Country Club, is considered one of the best college golf facilities in the nation.

While they’ve only secured one national championship, the men’s and women’s college golf teams have finished runner-up on multiple occasions during the past 10 years (2022 for the women’s team and 2017 for the men’s team).  This is a program that is certainly on the rise.

18. Texas A&M

• NCAA Championships: 1 (2009 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Bobby Nichols, Sam Bennett, and Adela Cernousek
• Additional Highlights: The Aggies secured their first national title in 2009 and continue to compete at the highest level within the very competitive SEC. The Golf Club at Texas A&M rivals any course in college golf which leads to a strong recruiting network.

One of the top young players on the PGA Tour – Sam Bennett – played at A&M from 2018-2023.

17. Tennessee

• NCAA Championships: 0
• Notable Alumni: Randy Glover, Mason Rudolph, and Violeta Retamoza
• Additional Highlights: The Volunteers have produced elite individual players and remain competitive in the SEC, winning three conference championships. UT has competed in a total of 17 NCAA Championships and 27 NCAA Regionals. Their challenging schedule helps prepare players for professional careers.

16. LSU

• NCAA Championships: 5 (2015, 1955, 1947, 1942 and 1940 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Jenny Lidback, David Toms, Fred Haas, and Gardner Dickinson
• Additional Highlights: LSU has had a long history of success winning five national championships and an impressive 16 SEC championships.

In addition to team championships, the Tigers have won four NCAA individual national championships – Fred Haas (1937), Earl Stewart (1941), John Peterson (2011), and Austin Ernst (2011).

15. Clemson University

• NCAA Championships: 1 (2003 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Carson Young, Ben Martin, and Lucas Glover
• Additional Highlights: While Clemson has certainly made its mark on the NCAA Championships in recent years (winning in 2003 and finishing runner-up in 2001 and 1998), their college golf program has produced many individual talents. Last year, nearly a dozen Clemson alumni were playing on the PGA Tour or the lower-level Korn Ferry Tour.

Lucas Glover, who played for Clemson from 1998 to 2001, is currently ranked #41 in the Golf World Rankings.

14. University of Southern California

• NCAA Championships: 3 (2013, 2008, and 2003 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Craig Stadler, Nicole Castrale, Jennifer Rosales and Anna Rawson
• Additional Highlights: USC boasts strong men’s and women’s programs and has produced top professional talent. The Trojans’ women’s team has been one of the top programs in the country over the past 30 years, winning three national championships (2013, 2008, and 2003) and finishing runner-up five times (2023, 2014, 2010, 2006, and 1994). benefit from excellent facilities and premier coaching.

13. Auburn University

• NCAA Championships: 1 (2024 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Patton Kizzire and Jason Dufner
• Additional Highlights: Auburn’s college golf program has surged in recent years, competing for national titles and recruiting elite talent. Head Coach Nick Clinard has been instrumental in elevating the program, leading the team to multiple tournament victories and their historic national championship win in 2024.

In 2024, Auburn University golfer Jackson Koivun became the first-ever collegiate player to sweep all four major collegiate awards in the same season (Haskins Award, Jack Nicklaus Award, Ben Hogan Award, and Phil Mickelson Award).

12. University of Oklahoma

• NCAA Championships: 2 (2017 and 1989 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Anthony Kim, Andrew Magee, and Abe Ancer
• Additional Highlights: A top-tier program with multiple deep NCAA Championship runs. Oklahoma’s golf training facilities are some of the best in the country. The Sooners’ men’s program has won 19 conference championships and two national championships, and has finished runner-up twice (as recently as 2021).

11. University of Alabama

• NCAA Championships: 3 (2013 and 2014 – men’s; 2012 – women’s)
• Notable Alumni: Justin Thomas, Lee Hodges, Nick Dunlap and Cheyenne Knight
• Additional Highlights: Alabama’s program continues to grow and has become one of the most consistent contenders on both the men’s and women’s sides over the past 15 years. Producing stars like Justin Thomas and recent top-ranked amateurs, the Crimson Tide have won five SEC Championships and appeared in 27 NCAA Tournaments.

Alabama’s home course is the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex, which is a municipal public golf course in Tuscaloosa.

10. Wake Forest University

• NCAA Championships: 4 (2023 – women’s team; 1986, 1974 and 1974 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Arnold Palmer, Webb Simpson, Cameron Young, Will Zalatoris, Bill Haas, and Rachel Keuhn
• Additional Highlights: Wake Forest is home to one of the greatest golfers of all time, Arnold Palmer, and boasts elite college golf training facilities. The school remains highly competitive in national tournaments. The women’s golf team won their first NCAA Championship in 2023 by defeating the University of Southern California 3-1 in the final match.

The Demon Deacons’ home course is Old Town Country Club, which is consistently rated as one of the top courses in America and was just ranked as the (that certainly helps with recruiting!).

9. Duke University

• NCAA Championships: 7 (2019, 2014, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2002 and 1999 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Art Wall Jr., Brittany Lang, and Anna Grzebien Vanderlinde
• Additional Highlights: Duke has been absolutely dominant in women’s golf, especially over the past 25 years – winning 7 NCAA championships and finishing runner-up twice. The only reason the Blue Devils aren’t higher on this list is that the men’s program hasn’t quite caught up with the women’s.

Nonetheless, Duke’s combination of elite academics and golf development makes it a top-tier program.

8. University of Georgia

• NCAA Championships: 3 (2005 and 1999 – men’s team; 2001 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Bubba Watson, Brian Harman, Sepp Straka and Chris Kirk
• Additional Highlights: The Bulldogs remain one of the most competitive programs in college golf, having produced multiple professional players, including two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson.

The men’s team has won 29 SEC championships, and the UGA Golf Course has earned national recognition, having previously been ranked No. 1 among collegiate courses and No. 10 among all courses nationwide.

7. UCLA

• NCAA Championships: 5 (2008 and 1988 – men’s team and 2011, 2004, 1991 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Corey Pavin, Scott McCarron, Steve Pate, Jane Park, Ryann O’Toole, and Bronte Law
• Additional Highlights: The Bruins have a well-respected program, and benefit from Southern California’s year-round playing conditions and elite junior golf pipeline.

The UCLA women’s college golf team has long been one of the top-tier programs in the country, winning three national championships and finishing runner-up five times (as recently as 2024).

6. University of Florida

• NCAA Championships: 7 (2023, 2001, 1993, 1973, and 1968 – men’s team; 1985 and 1986 – women’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Doug Sanders, Mark Calcavecchia, Andy Bean, and Billy Horschel
• Additional Highlights: The Gators won their most recent championship in 2023, reaffirming their status as one of the best programs in the country. Florida provides year-round access to top-level courses and offers both men’s and women’s NCAA Division I golf programs that consistently perform well in competition.

In addition to consistent team success, the Gators have produced a list of notable PGA Tour stars, including the 2024 FedEx Cup Runner Up and 20th ranked player in the world Billy Horschel.

5. University of Texas

• NCAA Championships: 5 (2022, 2012, 2009, 1971 and 1972 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Ben Crenshaw and Justin Leonard
• Additional Highlights: The Longhorns consistently recruit top talent, with alumni including Jordan Spieth, Tom Kite, and current top-ranked player in the world Scottie Scheffler. The college golf program has been a staple on the collegiate golf leaderboards for more than 50 years with continued dominance.

The Longhorns’ home course is the University of Texas Golf Club, which overlooks Lake Austin and borders the Balcones Natural Wildlife Preserve.

4. Arizona State University

• NCAA Championships: 10 (2017, 2009, 1998, 1997, 1995, 1994, 1993 and 1990 – women’s team; 1996 and 1990 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Paul Casey, Emily Klein, Azahara Munoz, and Anna Nordqvist
• Additional Highlights: During the ‘90s, there was no more dominant college golf program for both men and women than the Sun Devils. This collegiate talent has translated to the professionals, too, as ASU has produced multiple major tournament winners, including Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm.

3. Oklahoma State University

• NCAA Championships: 11 (2018, 2006, 2000, 1995, 1991, 1987, 1983, 1980, 1978, 1976 and 1963 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Rickie Fowler, Morgan Hoffman, Viktor Hovland and Bo Van Pelt
• Additional Highlights: One of the most dominant programs in college golf history, the Oklahoma State men’s program has had an unparalleled tradition of success. The Cowboys have won 11 NCAA Championships and 55 conference championships, and produced 46 individual conference champions.

The women’s program has been on the rise, too, finishing national runner-up twice, as recently as 2021.

2. University of Houston

• NCAA Championships: 16 (1985, 1984, 1982, 1977, 1970, 1969, 1967, 1966, 1965, 1964, 1962, 1960, 1959, 1958, 1957 and 1956 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Fuzzy Zoeller, Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Nick Faldo, Jim Nantz (who played golf at UH!) and Butch Harmon
• Additional Highlights: In the ‘60s and ‘70s, UCLA had the greatest winning streak in college basketball history. The University of Houston was the golf equivalent.

The Cougars are the most decorated program in NCAA golf history, Houston’s men’s college golf team has secured an incredible 16 NCAA national championships.  Although they haven’t won a title since 1986, the Cougars set the standard for college golf excellence.

The University of Houston’s women’s team is quickly becoming a competitive force, too,  securing multiple conference titles. In fall 2023, they set a school record for the lowest team round.

1. Stanford University

• NCAA Championships: 12 (2024, 2022 and 2015 – women’s team; 2019, 2007, 1994, 1953, 1946, 1942, 1941, 1939 and 1938 – men’s team)
• Notable Alumni: Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, Rose Zhang, Angela Stanford, and Lawson Little
• Additional Highlights: While there is certainly an incredible level of talent on this list, Stanford takes the top spot due to the program’s longevity as well as its balanced success between both the men’s and women’s programs.

The alma mater of Tiger Woods, Stanford remains a powerhouse in college golf. The men’s program won as recently as 2019 and the women’s program is currently considered the best in the sport.
