Before we get into the Best Swimming Colleges, it is worth saying that the United States is a swimming powerhouse. At last year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, the American men’s and women’s swimming squads combined to win more gold medals than any other team. And that’s been the : the US had led the medal table in swimming in the last nine Olympic games. In terms of the raw numbers, Team USA’s dominance is even more staggering: the United States’ Olympic swim team has , 265 of which are gold (the second most decorated Olympic swim team is Australia, with 230 total medals).

There are myriad reasons as to why the United States has dominated the sport, but chief among them is the fact that American universities produce elite swimmers. An found that more than half of US national team swimmers graduated from one of just eight schools. So what are the best swimming colleges? Check out the list below.

Best Women’s Swimming Colleges

9) University of Arizona

Although the women’s Wildcats aren’t currently ranked within the top 25 nationally, they’re still one of the best swimming colleges of all time. Why? Since swimming was added to the NCAA championship program in 1982, only nine women’s teams have won national titles, and Arizona is one of them. In 2008, the women’s Wildcats dethroned the two-time defending champs Auburn to win their first national championship.

8) USC

The women’s Trojans are currently ranked 12th in the nation according to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) .

USC is always well represented at the Olympics; at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, six current or former women’s Trojans . In their history, the women’s Trojans have produced a total of fifteen Olympic gold medalists, seventeen silver medalists, and fifteen bronze medalists. Another reason USC is one of the best swimming colleges in the country? In 1997, they bested perennial powerhouse Stanford to become first-time national champions.

7) University of Florida

Florida has one of the best women’s swimming programs in the country. Since the NCAA and SEC incorporated women’s swimming in 1981, the women’s Gators have dominated the sport on both a regional and national level. The women’s Gators are two-time national champs (1982, 2010), and they’ve won the SEC championship an incredible seventeen times. They’re currently ranked 5th in the CSCAA Division I poll.

6) University of California, Berkeley

The Cal Women’s swimming team is one of the premier programs in the country. Here’s a quick overview of their resumé: they’re four-time national champs, having won the NCAA Division I women’s swimming and diving championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2015. They’re five-time Pac-12 champions, and over the course of their history, Cal swimmers have amassed 51 Olympic medals.

To be fair, twelve of those Olympic medals are the result of a single Cal product, Natalie Coughlin Hall, who competed for the Golden Bears between 2001 and 2004. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Coughlin won six medals, a first for a female athlete. Having won a total of sixty medals across the Olympics, World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and Pan American Games, Coughlin’s career makes her one of the best swimmers of all time.

Right now, the Golden Bears are tied with Michigan for 8th in the country in terms of overall ranking.

5) Auburn University

In the early to mid-2000s, the Auburn women’s swimming program stood alone at the top of the sport: from 2002 to 2007, the women’s Tigers won five national championships in a row. Zimbabwean Kirsty Coventry, who by the end of her career would be one of the most decorated Olympic swimmers of all time, was a part of the 2003, 2004, and 2005 Tigers championship teams.

The women’s Tigers haven’t won a national championship since 2007, but they’re still one of the best swimming colleges in the country. As of the writing of this article, they’re ranked 19th in the CSCAA Top 25.

4) University of Texas at Austin

With seven national championships, only one women’s swimming program is more decorated than the Longhorns. Their heyday was in the 1980s and early 90s: between 1984 and 1988, the women’s Longhorns strung together five national titles in a row, and they added two more in back-to-back years in 1990 and 1991.

The women’s Longhorns currently sit as the 2nd highest-ranked team in the national standings.

3) University of Georgia

The women’s Bulldogs have been at the top of collegiate swimming since the team was established in 1974. They’re seven-time NCAA champions (1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2014, 2016), and, as is typical of the best swimming colleges, they’ve produced a plethora of world-class talent. To name drop just one notable alum, five-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin graduated from the University of Georgia in 2019.

2) University of Virginia

The women’s Cavaliers are the five-time defending NCAA champs; they won their first national title in 2021 and haven’t looked back since. As you might expect, they’re the top-ranked swim team in the country, and their list of notable alumni includes Olympic medalists Gretchen Walsh (two gold and two silver medals at the 2024 Games in Paris), Kate Douglass (two gold, two silver, and one bronze at the Paris Games), and Paige Madden (two silver medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games, a bronze at the 2024 Paris Games).

1) Stanford University

Stanford is the most decorated women’s college swim team of all time. They’ve won an astounding eleven NCAA titles, and they’ve managed to stretch their dominance out over the decades. In 1983, just a year after the NCAA incorporated women’s swimming, the women’s Cardinal won their first national championship. In the 90s, they put together a run of five championships in a row between 1992 and 1996. And most recently, they pulled off three consecutive titles between 2017 and 2019.

Stanford counts among its alumni Katie Ledecky, who is widely considered to be the greatest female swimmer of all time. The list of Ledecky’s accomplishments is too extensive to chronicle here, but the key takeaway is that with nine Olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals, she’s the most decorated female swimmer in history and the fifth-most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.

The women’s Cardinals are currently ranked 3rd in the national standings.

Best Men’s Swimming Colleges

13) Yale University

The men’s Bulldogs are four-time NCAA champions (1942, 1944, 1951, 1953), though they’re not currently ranked within the top 25 nationally.

12) University of Tennessee

The men’s Vols won a DI championship in 1978, and they’re a consistent presence nationally—they finished the 2025 season ranked 6th in the national standings. Since they were founded in 1934, the Vols have produced 24 Olympic swimmers.

11) Ohio State

The Ohio State men’s swim team is one of the most decorated of all time, with eleven national championships in their history. And even though their most recent championship came in 1962, Ohio State is still one of the best swimming colleges in the country. The Buckeyes are currently ranked 13th in the national standings, and last year, eight current or former Ohio State swimmers competed in the Paris Olympic Games.

10) University of Arizona

The men’s Wildcats won their first and only NCAA championship in 2008. They currently hold the 23rd spot in the national rankings.

9) Arizona State University

Last year, Arizona State solidified its reputation as one of the best swimming colleges in the country, as the Sun Devils won their first ever NCAA national championship. So far this year, they’ve got an 11-1 record, which puts them 5^th in the national standings.

8) University of Florida

The Gators have all the hallmarks of an elite swimming college. They’ve won two national championships (1983, 1984), they’ve dominated their conference (they’ve won the SEC forty times), and they’ve produced world-class talent. The men’s Gators finished the 2025 season ranked 4th according to the CSCAA poll.

7) USC

With nine national championships, the Trojans are one of the best colleges with swim teams of all time. Their reign of dominance came in the 1960s and 70s. All nine of the Trojans’ national titles came between the years of 1960 and 1977. But they’re still a consistent national contender—in 2025, they finished 16th in the national standings.

6) Indiana University

The Hoosiers are six-time national champs; those six championships came in six consecutive years between 1968 and 1973. That feat alone would make Indiana one of the best swimming colleges of all time. However, the Hoosiers haven’t exactly faded into obscurity since then. They’re currently the 2nd highest-ranked swim team in the country, with 351 total points and a 5-1 record.

5) Stanford University

The men’s Cardinals have won a total of eight national titles. Their first came in 1967, but they were especially dominant in the 80s and 90s, winning NCAA championships in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1998. Right now, the men’s Cardinals are 9th in the overall standings.

4) Auburn University

The Auburn men have won the NCAA championship eight times since they were founded in 1934. All eight of those championships have come since 1997, so they’re one of the best swimming colleges of the last three decades. In 2008, Auburn set a new school record by sending eighteen swimmers to the Beijing Olympic Games.

3) University of Michigan

The Wolverines are twelve-time NCAA champions. Their first championship came all the way back in 1937, and they won their most recent title in 2013. Only one collegiate swim team—the men’s Longhorns—are more decorated than Michigan. In 2012, Michigan’s athletic department combined the men’s and women’s swimming programs under then-coach Mike Bottom, who posted an overall record of 74-19. Matt Bowe took over as head coach of the swimming program in 2023.

The men’s Wolverines are currently ranked 10th in the national standings; the women are ranked 8th.

2) University of California, Berkeley

With eight national titles, Cal has the hardware to make it one of the best swimming colleges of all time. But it’s their remarkable consistency that set the Golden Bears apart. For the , the men’s Golden Bears have finished the year either as NCAA champions or runners-up.

1) University of Texas at Austin

The men’s Longhorns are the best collegiate swim team of all time. They’ve won sixteen national titles, four more than the Michigan men and five more than the Stanford women, their closest competitors in terms of overall championships.

The Texas men won the 2025 NCAA DI championships. After the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a total of 34 Longhorns’ men have become Olympic medalists.
