Solebury School was founded in 1925 as a progressive alternative to the more rigid and authoritarian educational systems of the time. It has continued on this progressive path, adopting many innovative programs well before their common acceptance in American education. Today, Solebury continues this tradition as a college preparatory, co-educational boarding and day school, encouraging students and faculty to act collegially in the learning process and to form relationships based on mutual respect. Intrinsic to Solebury’s philosophy is a profound respect for the individual and a rejection of conformity for its own sake. Each student is encouraged to think creatively, independently and critically, and to understand his or her responsibility to the larger world. While Solebury’s style is informal, its curriculum is rigorous and prepares students for success at a range of colleges according to their best fit, including the most selective schools in the nation.
Academic Program:
Although each discipline teaches its own skills and its own methods, they have in common the goals of teaching students how to learn, how to solve problems, and how to become as effective a person as one can be. Solebury’s distinctive and dynamic academic program guides students to discover and pursue their passions and inspires them to set and rise to rigorous expectations.
Solebury’s academic year is divided into three trimesters. The first ends in mid-November, the second ends in early March, and the third ends in early June. Class periods are 80 minutes each. The last three days of each trimester are for final exams.
