It鈥檚 natural to dread looking at the sticker price for higher education. In 2024, the most expensive colleges in the country charged nearly $100,000 in annual cost. For students, it is difficult to decide to sign up for debt to secure a job later on. The potential cost of higher education can dissuade students from expanding their college search, or even applying to college at all.
However, various colleges and universities offset the cost of attendance by providing qualifying students with free tuition. While some universities offer free tuition to the whole student body, most institutions that offer free tuition base their aid on family income. Income eligibility ranges widely, from salaries of $50,000 and less to those of $200,000 and less.
There are a few conditions to this type of funding: family assets usually get factored in alongside income, and schools calculate final cost using different criteria. Importantly, tuition does not cover the entire cost of attendance, but many colleges with financial accessibility programs provide full-ride scholarships that cover room and board and other fees alongside tuition for qualifying students.

They can sometimes fill the gap left after other funding sources, such as federal Pell Grants, have been exhausted. A lot of schools don鈥檛 publish the exact figure for which they provide full tuition, but take care of 100% of demonstrated need for students based on Pell-eligibility and other factors.
