Colleges with the Best Student Life – Going to college is a huge investment. You’ve worked your whole life up to this point where you have to choose—without ever having gone to college before—where you should (potentially) invest tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears. When does it end? How does anyone choose? 

Perhaps you’ve reached the point in your decision-making process where you’ve already eliminated common concerns, like: 

• Who gave me the best financial aid package? Which school is the most affordable?

• Which faculty would I like to study under? 
• Do I want to live close to home? Far away? In a city? On a campus? 

And now you’re pursuing that elusive windmill, the white whale of the college search: where will I be the happiest? 

Happiness on College Campuses 

A 2022 study published in the International journal of environmental research and public health named some pretty essential items as the key determining factors in whether or not college students were happy. What did the researchers find? The biggest factors that determined college student happiness were: 

• Their overall state of health 
• A harmonious relationship with parents and/or family members 
• Good academic performance 
• Going to bed early 
• Being in a loving relationship 

Now, your mileage may vary and—I’ll argue—that the definitions in terms like “harmonious relationship with parents” and “a loving relationship” can really change from person to person. The study identified a “loving relationship” as a romantic relationship, but the overall point that they make is that, when students transfer from their family environment to a college campus, they transfer their need for emotional attachment, as well. Romantic relationships are one way to recreate that emotional connection, but, of course, other positive, reciprocal, caretaking relationships (like close friendships) can fulfill that need, as well. 

And maybe your relationship with your parents hasn’t always been positive, but maybe you’ve learned positive ways to work with the relationship you’ve got. It might not be a Hallmark movie, but you might have some positive coping mechanisms in place. That could easily suffice to buoy your happiness while at school, you know?

Still, these are frustratingly simple things, no? Could it really be as easy as going to bed early and getting good grades? Does it even really matter where you go to school at all? 

Guys, I’m telling you: it really might not. 

The longest-running study on happiness, the , which began way back in the 1930s, demonstrates that it is the quality of our relationships that determines our sense of happiness above all else. The research shows over and over again that we are more satisfied in our lives when we feel connected to the people around us. That idea backs up what the research shows in the college student happiness study, too, right? When students leave their family environments, they need to find other caring relationships to take the place of family. When they manage to do that, students are much better off. 

The factors that influence our basic happiness are pretty simple. We feel better when we’re taking good care of our physical and mental health, when we’re taking care of the relationships that matter to us, when we feel a sense of physical safety and a sense of social belonging. And then we can add all the various cherries on top: specific activities that we love to do, specific types of environments that we want to be in, specific kinds of people we want to be around. 

The bottom line is this: don’t overthink it.

When it comes to figuring out the college at which you will be the happiest or the most satisfied or living your best life, start by taking care of you and cultivating and caring for the relationships that are important to you, and then add on all the other goodies. But you’ll never be satisfied at school if you’re not able to tend to and listen to your needs—even at the most fun and entertaining university in the world. 

A lot of this might come down to the very du jour idea of vibes. When you go on your college tours, how do you feel? Take a moment to observe your thoughts and feelings as you interact with different people on campus: 

• Do you feel at ease talking with people? 
• Do you like the person you’re being as you’re talking with current students, tour guides, and faculty? 
• Do you feel like you’re able to be yourself—or do you feel like you’re straining or that you don’t really like what’s going on?
• If the vibes are off, but you thought you’d really like the place, that’s ok. It could be an off day. Are you hungry? Anxious? Sad? Stressed about the choice? Is something getting in your way of bringing your authentic self to the interactions? 
• If so, it might be worth taking some time off and then scheduling a follow-up visit. 
• If not—if you really feel like you’re doing your best but you just can’t feel things fall into place—it is also just fine to let go of your perceptions of a specific university and go somewhere where you feel more at ease.

My best advice to you is not to force it. Go where you feel a sense of lightness in your body and your mind. Don’t try to shove yourself into a container where you think you’re supposed to belong. You’ll be much more likely to find success, satisfaction, and your “best life” if you’re not fighting against your own fundamental nature while you’re on campus. 

Do your best to not shame yourself if you don’t feel “at home” at a school you think you’re “supposed” to go to. Do your best to let go of any preconceptions you have about what your college experience is supposed to be like. Let yourself go where you naturally feel good—and you stand a much better chance at feeling good over the next four years. 

Ok, ok, but which colleges actually have the best student life? 

Luckily for you, ������һ����ӰԺ�ݲ� has crunched the numbers on 25 of the most frequently and highly ranked universities for student satisfaction on campus. 

1) Stanford University

• 91–93% of students were with their overall undergraduate experience at Stanford in the graduating classes from 2016 to 2020. 
• 94% of students were generally or very satisfied with their level of intellectual excitement on campus; 79% were generally/very satisfied with social life on campus, however. 
• With an active student body, beautiful campus, access to outdoor recreation, and all the resources of Silicon Valley at their fingertips, students at Stanford tend to love their lives.

2) Brown University

• 93% of students were generally or very satisfied with opportunities for personal growth and development,
• 87% of students were very or generally satisfied with the quality of life on campus. 
• Known for its open curriculum and inclusive, collaborative student body, Brown is often ranked highly in terms of student life on campus. Brown students also have a strong tradition of social activism, which can add to feelings of belonging on campus.

3) University of Wisconsin-Madison

• 88% of seniors rated their overall experience as good or excellent, which is higher than the 81% average of peer institutions, according to UW Madison’s .
• 90% of seniors would attend UW-Madison again, which was a significantly higher figure than the 82% average among peer institutions.  
• 86% of UW-Madison first-year students would start over again at the school, if they could. 

4) University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

• 90–92% of students were “very satisfied or satisfied” with overall student life and campus life at UCLA
• The beauty of California campuses and weather can be hard to beat when it comes to student satisfaction. 
• With access to all of Los Angeles, the West Coast, and a vibrant and diverse student body, students at UCLA are super satisfied.

5) University of Pennsylvania

• A stunning 98.1% of students returned to U Penn after their first year in the fall of 2023. This means that students are really excited to take part in this Ivy League community. 
• The 6-year graduation rate is 96.8% for all students, 95.8% for underrepresented minorities, and 95% for Pell grantees. This indicates that Penn is also doing a high level of work at closing achievement gaps between more and less privileged students. 
• Student orgs and a strong entrepreneurial sensibility help students to feel in charge of their education at U Penn. It’s obviously keeping them coming back year after year. 

6) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

• 2022 survey results report that 93% of students feel satisfied with their academic experience, 91% feel UM is a welcoming campus, and 96% agree that diversity is personally important. 
• 79% participate in student organizations and 71% know at least one professor well enough to ask for a letter of recommendation.
• Ann Arbor is a vibrant college town and UM boasts a strong sense of school spirit, athletics, and arts.

7) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

• 66% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall social experience. 
• 73.5% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall academic experience, based on the .  
• This close-knit community offers a vibrant campus full of athletics, school spirit, and student organizations. 

8) University of California, Berkeley

• 64% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall academic experience, . 
• 50% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall social experience. 
• Berkely’s campus is known for its strong history of political activism. Add to that a diverse student body and plenty of social opportunities, and you’ve got a recipe for success. 

9) Emory University

• 66% of students of color and 77% of white students indicated that they “mostly matter” or “strongly matter” in classes with white professors, according to the most recent . 
• 61% of students of color and 38% of white students felt moderately or completely encouraged about having conversations about race with students of color. 
• While just under a third of all students felt that campus administration dealt with racism or racist incidents moderately or completely effectively, Emory is transparent about the data and its plan to improve on campus culture.

• 76% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall academic experience, . 
• 60% of students reported that they agree or strongly agree with the statement “I feel that I belong at University,” based on the same data set. 
• UVA offers a beautiful campus full of strong traditions and an active Greek life. This contributes to an exceptional sense of belonging at this southern university. 

11) Duke University

• Diversity is super important at Duke in the current moment. In 2021, assessed the experience of current students, faculty, and staff on campus, as related to social and racial equity. 
• Key takeaways include: Asian and white staff report the greatest satisfaction. Duke is committed to being more inclusive and diverse leadership. Most Asian, Black, Hispanic, and white members of the campus community reported attending diversity programming in the year before the survey. 
• More than 60% of female staff and students say they are satisfied with Duke’s commitment to promote women.

12) University of Texas at Austin

• 73% of students feel that they belong at UT Austin, according to .
• 63.3% of students are satisfied with their overall academic experience. 40.5% are satisfied with their overall social experience. 
• UT Austin benefits from a dynamic arts and music scene, a diverse student body, and major sporting events that help create a sense of belonging. 

13) Harvard University

• 77% of people on campus—including students, faculty, and staff—agreed with the statement, “I belong at Harvard,” according to . 
• 74% of students responded in agreement to that same statement. 
• Harvard has been taking positive steps toward increasing inclusion and belonging among historically marginalized groups since the 2021 survey. 

14) Columbia University

• 94% of students at Columbia indicate that their friendships have the greatest impact on their sense of belonging at the university located in New York City, according to the . 
• Across all measured racial and ethnic groups (Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African American, Asian, White, and Additional Identities), students shared a sense of belonging at Columbia from 60–67%. 
• 80% of students agreed that their peers are capable of listening to the perspective of others with whom they disagree.

15) University of Georgia 

• UGA’s retention rate—the percentage of students returning to campus after their first year—is 94%, according to UGA Government Relations. 
• 75% of students finish their degrees in just four years, and 88% of those students finish their degrees in six years, both great indicators of student satisfaction on campus. 
• 96% of students from the 2022 graduating class were employed, attending graduate school, or engaged in a postgraduate internship within six months of graduation, another top indicator of students’ ability to flourish and thrive on campus. 

16) Vanderbilt University

• 93% of students were satisfied with the level of intellectual excitement on campus, according to the . 
• 87% of survey respondents were satisfied with their undergraduate education, according to the same data. 
• Vanderbilt’s campus community is tight-knit and collaborative, with tons of strong traditions and campus events to keep students engaged. 

17) University of Miami

• Among graduates in the 2016 cohort, 74% graduated in just four years, and 84.1% got their degrees in six years, . 
• For the 2021 cohort, Miami had a 92.1% retention rate. The rate is generally between 90–92% most years, which means students are very happy to come back to campus after their first year. 
• The Hurricanes are known for having a vibrant campus culture with a strong sense of community and long-standing events that embrace Miami’s diverse culture.

• 92% of seniors evaluated their overall education experience positively at WFU, according to the . 
• 86% indicated that they would start over again at WFU if they could. 
• 97.8% of graduating seniors started their undergraduate degree at WFU. This means they were happy to return to campus year after year. 

19) Northwestern University

• 80% of students indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with their undergraduate experience so far, according to the . 
• 66% of survey respondents said they agreed with the statement, “I feel like a part of the community at Northwestern.” 
• 58% of all students agreed with the statement, “I feel valued at Northwestern,” which is a good indicator of a deeper investment on campus.

• From 2018–2022, 36.7–43.1% of students . 
• In the same years, 80–85% of students perceived that they were being treated fairly and equitably in the classroom, and similar numbers reported being treated fairly outside of classrooms. 
• USC’s 2022 Cultural Report identifies their core values as: accountability, integrity, excellence, diversity, equity and inclusion, well-being, and open communication, and the campus community makes efforts to live up to those values 

21) University of Chicago

• 84% of students said they feel a sense of belonging on campus, according to the most recent campus climate survey data. 
• 85% of students said they feel welcome; 74% said they feel valued. 
• The from the University of Chicago contains a wealth of data on how students, staff, and faculty feel about life on campus, and the school’s openness regarding feelings around racism from Black students bodes well for transparency at the campus level. 

22) New York University (NYU)

• 94% of first-year students , a huge predictor of student satisfaction on campus. 
• 87% of first-year students graduate in six years, another huge indicator that students are thriving on campus. 
• 93% of the Class of 2022 graduates were employed or in graduate school within just 6 months of graduation. This meaning that students were able to put their time in Manhattan to good use to launch their careers or further study.

23) Indiana University Bloomington

• For the 2022 cohort, the total retention rate was a strong 90.1%,
• For full-time beginners, the six-year graduate rate was 81.2%. This means students are doing pretty well with their ability to thrive on campus. 
• Bloomington’s Big Ten party school culture, complete with lots of athletics and events, makes the university a fun place to study and play. 

24) University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

• First-year retention for the 2022 cohort was meaning students were more than happy to come back to UCSD for their sophomore year. 
• 74% of students in the 2019 cohort graduated in just three or four years, according to .
