2020 certainly changed the way that we all think about remote work, with many companies and fields permanently revising their work-from-home and hybrid work policies to be more flexible for employees. In 2023, a whopping 40.9% of full-time employees in the United States reported that they either fully worked from home (12.7%) or worked in a hybrid capacity from home and from the office (28.2%). This leaves about 60% of workers still in-office, but experts expect that remote work in the U.S. is still increasing.[iv]

As such, you should bear in mind what it can mean to work in a different city from your employer鈥檚 base. However, it can be much less beneficial to work from home in an expensive city like New York for a company based in a suburb of a smaller, less expensive city like Buffalo.
