About Us
Fun fact: Smith was the first women’s college to create a program in engineering science.
As such, these summer STEM programs are an excellent place for young women to participate in hands-on research experiences.
There are two two-week sessions offered, and students can take one or both. Each session offers distinct course choices. For example, the first session offers Designing Intelligent Robots and Truth in Advertising: The Chemistry Behind Everyday Claims on Food and Drugs. While the second session has: Novel Bacteriophage Discovery and Global Young Women’s Health.
SSEP courses emphasize asking questions and learning by doing, not only by listening and watching. Students choose two-week courses; in these, groups of up to 17 students work alongside Smith faculty members, assisted by undergraduate interns. Informal lectures in the lab and out in the field encourage students to ask questions, and they learn to conduct actual experiments.
Some courses have prerequisites and age minimums. For Example: Your Gene’s and Genetic Analyses: A Laboratory in Human Genetics is open to rising juniors and seniors who have completed at least one year of high school biology. Furthermore, admission is selective. Serious applicants should have a strong academic record, stellar teacher recommendations, and a well-written essay. Given that Smith is a women’s college, only female students are eligible for this program.
