Washington Youth Summit on the Environment

About Us

Hosted by George Mason University and Smithsonian鈥檚 National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) is an intensive, hands-on program.

Each summer, WYSE welcomes National Youth Delegates from all over the country. Students will experience an integrated and forward-thinking approach to the environment, while acquiring valuable 鈥渋n-the-trenches鈥 knowledge. Curriculum includes hands-on learning with industry leaders, international conservation experts, research scientists, and Washington insiders. WYSE recruits award-winning faculty and junior faculty from across the country to lead groups of 20 students throughout the week of conference activities,

All students live in on-campus housing at George Mason. Although the majority of students are nominated by an educator or invited by the university, it鈥檚 possible to nominate yourself. To create the strongest application for these environmental science summer programs for high school students, you should be quite strong academically. You should also have leadership experience as well as a demonstrated passion for environmental science. The admission process is competitive; only 300 participants are selected. Finally, you鈥檒l need to be on the ball early鈥揳pplications typically close in December.
