So much of the college application process is every bit as regimented and time-sensitive as the everyday lives of teenage applicants. After all, you’re used to the alarm on your phone waking you up at 6:45 AM, getting to school by 7:30, first period starting at 7:40, and so on, and so on, throughout your day. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a shock when you encounter firm deadlines for Early Action, Early Decision, Early Decision II, Regular Decision, priority admission, scholarship consideration, and financial aid. It may seem that a ticking clock is simply the looped soundtrack to your senior year of high school…unless you look at colleges with rolling admission deadlines.

What is rolling admission?

Rolling admission means that a college offers a wide window of time in which you can submit an application. Rather than waiting for all applications to be submitted, the admissions office evaluates them on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the fall and winter, and sometimes even into the spring or summer. Essentially, these institutions don’t stop accepting applications until their freshman class is officially filled.  While you won’t find rolling admissions options at any Ivy League or Ivy-equivalent university, there are a number of highly reputable schools that do offer such flexibility.

However, “rolling deadline” is not necessarily synonymous with “late deadline.” Many rolling admission colleges and universities strive to fill their classes as early as possible, and offer enhanced admission and scholarship consideration to those who apply by their priority deadlines (some of which fall as early as October or November). Even if no priority deadline exists, though, applying as early in the cycle as you can will give you the best chance at acceptance. If you wait until the end of the school’s application period, there may be very few spots, if any, remaining.

In addition, some schools utilize a mix of application-review practices over the course of the cycle. For example, they may only offer rolling admission after a certain date, and only if there are still spots available, so be sure to check all policies closely.

Best Colleges with Rolling Admission

Best Public Universities with Rolling Admission

Public universities are most likely to have rolling admission policies. However, as mentioned previously, many have priority application and scholarship deadlines that often fall quite early in the application period.

1) Rutgers University—New Brunswick

• Application Period: Rutgers has an early action deadline of November 1 and a regular decision deadline of December 1, but accepts applications on a rolling basis after these dates for any undergraduate colleges that still have available spots.
• Acceptance Rate: 41%

2) Penn State University

• Application Period: Application opens August 1. Any applications received before November 1 will be considered for Early Action; any received after November 1 will be considered on a rolling basis. Rolling admissions continue into July, but many of those who wait will only find availability at branch campuses, not the university’s famous University Park location.
• Acceptance Rate: 61%

3) University of Pittsburgh

• Application Period: Application opens August 1, and the admissions office begins reviewing applications in late August. Students who are looking for max scholarship consideration or aiming for certain programs (such as the Frederick Honors College) should apply by December 1.
• Acceptance Rate: 58%

4) University of South Florida

• Application Period: Students who apply by the Early Action deadline of November 1st are guaranteed to receive a decision by mid-December; those who apply by the Regular Decision deadline of December 15th will receive one by mid-February. Any applications received after December 15th will be considered on a rolling basis until March 1st. The priority scholarship deadline is January 15.
• Acceptance Rate: 43%

5) Temple University

• Application Period: Students can complete an application starting August 1. The earlier they submit an application, the better their odds of acceptance. For the best chances, they should submit by the early action deadline of November 1st, but can submit up until March 15th.
• Acceptance Rate: 80%

6) University of Iowa

• Application Period: Iowa starts reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting in late September. They do offer several priority benchmarks, including an early action deadline of November 3rd and a regular decision (and scholarship) deadline of February 2nd. After that, students will only be admitted on a case-by-case, space-available basis.
• Acceptance Rate: 84%

• Application Period: All students are encouraged to apply by the Early Action deadline of November 1st. After that, students can apply until April 1st to be considered for admission on a space-available basis, with decisions being “released in batches” during the spring.

• Application Period: Students who apply by October 15 will receive an admissions decision by November 15. Any applications received between November 1 and May 1 will be considered on a rolling basis.
