The college application process—particularly the timeline—can be fraught and opaque (not to mention full of confusing acronyms: EA, ED, ED2…). In all the chaos, perhaps you’ve fallen a bit behind and missed some deadlines, or your needs or preferences have changed since the beginning of the application process. There’s no need to panic! Luckily, there are many excellent colleges—public and private, large and small—with late application deadlines. Familiarizing yourself with these colleges can expand your options and reduce your stress. Moreover, a few extra months can make a world of difference in the overall quality of your application.

Why pay attention to colleges with late application deadlines?

The word “late” might have negative connotations, but there are many reasons you might be interested in colleges with late deadlines (beyond the fact that your top choice might already have a later-than-average deadline). Here are a few scenarios:

You Need More Time:

You experienced delays while assembling your application materials and missed earlier deadlines. Or, you need more time to present the strongest application possible—perhaps you’re retaking the SAT, would like to include senior-year grades, or are working on securing stronger letters of recommendation.

You’re Changing or Extending Your College List:

Perhaps you were rejected or waitlisted from every college that you applied to early acceptance, and are now concerned that your initial college list is too limited (particularly in terms of safety schools). Or, your interests or preferences have shifted, and your earlier selections are no longer a good fit.

You’ve Experienced Major Life Changes:

You were planning to take a gap year, attend a community college, or pursue other post-high school options, but have changed your mind. Or, your , and you want to apply to more affordable or local colleges.

What is the difference between a “late” application deadline and a rolling admission deadline?

Colleges with late regular decision deadlines (generally those that fall between February and April) will evaluate all applications received by that date in the same pool; no admissions preference is given to those who submit earlier in the regular decision “window.” For example, if a college’s Early Action deadline is November 1st and its Regular Decision deadline is March 15th, that means the regular decision “window” is from November 2nd to March 15th. Since no one’s application will be reviewed until the March 15th deadline has passed, someone who submits an application on March 14th will still have exactly the same shot at acceptance as someone who submitted an application on November 3rd.

However, colleges with rolling admission evaluate applications on a first-come, first-served basis until their first-year class is filled. So, while some of these institutions advertise that they accept applications into the spring or even the summer, your chances of acceptance can lessen significantly the later you apply. Any colleges with deadlines past April typically operate on a rolling basis.

The following list is organized by month. Predictably, options narrow (but do not disappear!) as you approach late spring.

Remember to confirm the information for any colleges in which you are interested by checking their websites (colleges do sometimes extend or change their deadlines mid-cycle). Also, note that some of these institutions may have earlier deadlines for scholarships, financial aid, or priority consideration. Some also accept applications on a space-available basis after the final deadline.

Finally, keep in mind that this list is not comprehensive. There may be a great choice for you not included here, particularly if you have geographical limitations or very specific academic/professional interests (art or nursing, for example). Likewise, colleges with rolling admission are not included on this list, but should be considered alongside colleges with late deadlines.
