Spelling tests are an essential part of expanding and maintaining a student’s vocabulary. These tests not only determine how well a student can spell, but also, they help instructors gauge a student’s understanding and progress throughout the academic year. Spelling tests also help improve a student’s spelling and vocabulary skills for the long term. Especially in the fifth grade, students are introduced to more challenging words and concepts which prepare for middle school and beyond. In this case, 5th grade spelling words may not be as straightforward and rely on the student’s ability to memorize and be aware of the word’s meaning.

Additionally, it can be a helpful strategy to use spelling words which are relevant to the current lesson plan. That way, students can not only have a better understanding of the vocabulary associated with the lesson but also the meaning of the term itself.

These skill words test specific benchmarks that a fifth-grade student should be able to meet on their spelling test. Skill words are trickier to master but establish a useful foundation for spelling later in life. But, we’ll explain these skill words in more detail below, as they vary for each age and grade level.

First, let’s begin with homophones, our first category on the list.

Homophones are words which sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.

The reason homophones are important to learn is because students can better make sense of what they read and differentiate between situational words. Therefore, sentences and word meanings become clearer. Plus, students may have heard of these words before but did not know they were spelled differently and in which circumstance they should be used.

At this stage, learning the nuance between homophones is a skill that fifth graders are well equipped for, and students can learn these words in pairs to make the process easier.

5th Grade Spelling Words – Homonyms

Homonyms are words which sound the same but have different spellings. These words are ticker to learn because they sound the same aloud, but when spelled, are used in different contexts.

For example, a fan can be used to cool yourself off. However, a fan can also be a person who is enthused by or who admires something.

In this case, while the spelling may not be as immediately challenging, students begin to understand that certain words can have more than one meaning. Learning these homophones helps broaden a student’s vocabulary and encourages them to think about nuances in language.

Especially as students continue to read and write more, they will need to know the correct spelling for these words. At this age, students may become more inclined to write short stories or other short fiction.

Poetry is also an accessible way to get students writing and thinking about words creatively. Using writing practice to learn these words is also a good strategy for studying.

Compound words happen when two or more words are joined together. While these words may have separate meanings on their own, they come together, they form a new word and meaning.

5th Grade Spelling Words – Skill Words

At the fifth-grade level, students learn even more grammatical patterns, including prefixes and suffixes. Here are some skillsets that fifth graders should be familiar with:

Prefixes

Adding certain letters at the beginning of the word can change the meaning of that word. Let’s take a look at some examples.

UN-

A UN- prefix means that the word has the opposite meaning. For example, if something is “unhelpful,” then it is not helpful. If it is “unready,” then it is not ready.

Instead of having to write out: not helpful or not ready, students can learn about the UN- prefix, which implies the “not” at the beginning of the word.

EX-

EX is another common prefix that is introduced at this stage. This prefix is also a common letter pair that is helpful to have in a student’s toolbox.

PRE-

The PRE- prefix means that the word in the process of happening or has already happened. For example, if something is “prepaid,” that means it has already been paid for.

Suffixes

Building on the knowledge from the 4rd grade spelling words, students can continue to learn more about suffixes. These are letter pairs which appear at the end of a word and change its meaning.

-LY

A common adjective ending, the -LY suffix is attributed to descriptive words. So, if someone is brave, then you may say that they acted boldly.

Students most likely hear this common suffix ending, so learning how to spell these words adds to their growing vocabulary.

-ER

The -ER suffix means that the word is more than. For example, if it happened quickly, then it may have happened faster than expected. It can happen fast, or it can happen faster.

-ANT

The final suffix, the -ANT is generally a good letter pairing to know. Many English words end in this suffix, and learning to recognize common words with this letter group helps to expand a student’s vocabulary.
