In the 2024-25 admissions cycle, NYU received over 120,000 applications. That was a record-breaking figure for the university, as was the all-time low acceptance rate of 9%. To put these numbers in proper context, consider for a moment that in 1991, NYU had an acceptance rate of 65%. At the start of the Obama presidency, NYU still only received 37,000 total applications. Clearly, standing out as an applicant to NYU was a heck of a lot easier a generation or even a mere decade ago. The mid-50% SAT score for first-years is currently 1470-1570, meaning that even a standardized test score in the 99th percentile won鈥檛 do much to separate you from the hordes of equally credentialed applicants.

2025-2026 NYU Supplemental Essay

This essay is optional, but we highly encourage anyone who would like to be a serious contender (which, if you鈥檙e taking the time to apply, hopefully you are) to answer it.

We are looking for students who want to be bridge builders鈥攕tudents who can connect people, groups, and ideas to span divides, foster understanding, and promote collaboration within a dynamic, interconnected, and vibrant global academic community. We are eager for you to tell us how your experiences have helped you understand what qualities and efforts are needed to bridge divides so that people can better learn and work together.

Please consider one or more of the following questions in your essay:

路 Tell us about a time you encountered a perspective different from your own. What did you learn鈥攁bout yourself, the other person, or the world?
路 Tell us about an experience you’ve had working with others who have different backgrounds or perspectives. What challenges did your group face? Did you overcome them, and if so, how? What role did you try to play in helping people to work together, and what did you learn from your efforts?
路 Tell us about someone you’ve observed who does a particularly good job helping people think or work together. How does this person set the stage for common exploration or work? How do they react when difficulties or dissensions arise?

While the essence of NYU’s prompt remains the same as last year, the questions that they’d like applicants to consider in their responses have changed. Instead of being open-ended, the questions are now quite focused, encouraging students to share specific past experiences or interactions. The strongest responses will also look to the future鈥攈ow do you plan to continue growing at NYU specifically?

So, before you start writing, take a look at the guiding questions and note which ones resonate with you. We’ll break down each question in turn:

Tell us about a time you encountered a perspective different from your own. What did you learn鈥攁bout yourself, the other person, or the world?

The U.S. presently finds itself in an extreme state of polarization. There seems to be little agreement even as to what constitutes 鈥渢ruth鈥 or 鈥渇acts.鈥 Within this divided world, it can be hard for individuals with competing viewpoints to engage in civil and productive dialogue.

Here, NYU is giving you the chance to show that you are an open-minded, intellectually curious, truth-seeking young person. Illustrate how you are willing to engage in conversations/debates with people who hold opposing positions on topics of great importance to you. What did you learn from this interaction? How do you plan to apply those learnings to your life?

One key thing to remember when addressing this prompt is that you don鈥檛 have to be the hero of the anecdote. In fact, you may be one who learned to expand their thinking.

Tell us about an experience you’ve had working with others who have different backgrounds or perspectives. What challenges did your group face? Did you overcome them, and if so, how? What role did you try to play in helping people to work together, and what did you learn from your efforts?

How you interact with your present surroundings is the strongest indicator of what kind of community member you will be in your future collegiate home. Accordingly, NYU wants you to reflect on a time when you’ve had to navigate a challenging group dynamic. The “group” you choose could be academic, extracurricular, or professional, and could be comprised of your peers or a mix of different ages. Think: class project, internship cohort, robotics team, student government committee, fellow service project volunteers, work colleagues, etc. What did you disagree about, and how did you try to facilitate understanding and progress? No matter what story you choose, it should be personal, sincere, and revealing of your core character and developing values system.

Tell us about someone you’ve observed who does a particularly good job helping people think or work together. How does this person set the stage for common exploration or work? How do they react when difficulties or dissensions arise?

Do you have any special role models in your life who have taught you valuable lessons about navigating conflict and bringing people together? If so, this prompt could be a great choice聽as long as you keep the following in mind:

  • Don’t make your entire response about the person you admire. If so, you’ll miss an opportunity to share more about yourself鈥攁nd you’re the one who is applying for admission! Try to spend just one-third to one-half of the response answering the questions above, and then use the rest of the space to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you’ve applied those learnings to your own life.
  • Be specific. Sharing a particular story about your person is much stronger than abstract generalizations. For example, “Before a service project, my youth group leader assigns roles and sets expectations, and changes our roles with every project so that we can experience different types of situations” is much stronger than “My youth group leader always does a great job helping us work together during service projects.”聽In that same vein, be specific about what you’ve learned and how you’ve put it into practice.

How important is the NYU supplemental essay?

In past years, the essay has been considered “important.” However, it has now been upgraded to 鈥渧ery important,” meaning that the essay is one of five primary factors considered by the admissions committee. The other four factors are 1) rigor of secondary school record, 2) GPA, 3) recommendations, and 4) character/personal qualities.
