In a competitive admissions environment, every piece of the Penn State application takes on a high level of importance. Therefore, it is vital that all Nittany Lion applicants opt to submit their Common App personal statement or dedicate time to writing one specifically for Penn State. Below are PSU’s supplemental writing instructions for the 2025-26 admissions cycle along with our advice for composing a winning essay.

Penn State Supplemental Writing Section

Penn State does not require a Personal Statement for your application to be considered complete. However, if you wrote a Personal Essay in your Common App profile and choose to include it in your application, your Personal Essay will be sent to Penn State once you submit your application.

If you’ve already written a Common App personal statement, all you need to do is include it with your application when you submit to Penn State. Done and done!

However, if you haven’t yet penned a Common App personal statement, we’d highly recommend doing so for Penn State *if* your academic credentials fall below the middle-50% of enrolled students or if you are applying to a very competitive major or program. In addition to the brainstorming tips in this blog, let’s go over two ways to quickly put together meaningful content:

The activity/experience brainstorm:

Are there any activities on your application that are crying out for more explanation and detail? Which one is closest to your heart and most representative of your unique passions? Pick the option that will allow you to deliver additional detail, lessons learned, and insights that may be memorable to the admissions reader. Start this process by asking, “What is the most interesting and consequential moment I have experienced in my extracurricular activities? How will this experience—and what I learned—demonstrate my preparedness for and/or potential contributions to a college campus?”

For example, you may be a volunteer EMT and have compelling experiences to share—experiences that taught you how to remain calm under pressure, a quality you’ll bring with you to the classroom. Alternatively, perhaps you worked in a local restaurant and learned more about the lives of your undocumented coworkers, which inspired you to become involved in immigration-related issues and even complete a specialized research project. You believe your ability to remain open-minded and empathetic will allow you to better connect with others and experience deeper learning.

The “missing piece” brainstorm:

Since the admissions reader is already familiar with your academic history, activities, and awards, make a list of what they already know about you. For example, perhaps they know that you’re a straight-A student with a laundry list of AP classes (mostly STEM-centric), a leadership role in your robotics club, and several prestigious awards at coding competitions. However, beyond those accolades and accomplishments, what else would you like an admissions officer to know about you? What could they understand on a deeper, more personal level? This could be a particular skill or talent, something about your character or personality, or an aspect of your background/identity. On the other hand, you may wish to speak more about your passions, hobbies, ideas, values, or beliefs. As long as you’re using the space to reveal more about yourself as a person and student, you can’t go wrong.

How important is the Penn State supplemental essay?

The essay is not among the most important factors to the admissions committee. GPA and the rigor of one’s courses are at the top of the list. However, as mentioned above, a strong essay may help push certain applicants over the edge toward an acceptance.
