Teens and young children alike can benefit enormously from the practice of journaling. Journaling can provide a healthy mode of processing all kinds of thoughts, from complicated emotions to funny ideas and big life goals. The classroom can be a great place to start journaling, whether the practice stays here or carries on throughout students鈥 lives. Without further ado, we present 150 journal prompts for middle and high school kids.
While we鈥檝e divided the prompts into five categories, many of them can be adapted to benefit students of different ages and grade levels. Collect ideas by jumping to your section of choice:
Elementary School Journal Prompts

- You can spend a day doing anything you want. What does that day look like?

Middle schoolers are typically ready for more advanced writing and deeper reflection. Use the following journal prompts to get their wheels turning!

- What is one way you can challenge yourself this week?
- What is one way you can make the most of today?

- Set intentions for the day. What values of yours are motivating your intentions?

Advice and Wisdom

- List five things you learned this week, and write about the most interesting one.
High School Journal Prompts
Journal prompts for high school students should inspire them to think critically, engage with themselves on a deeper level, and help them begin to consider their place in the world. Encourage them to be as unfiltered as possible for the best insights.
Personal Development, Reflection, and Goals
- How would you describe your leadership style? In what ways would you like to grow as a leader?
- How do you define success? What steps can you take to achieve your version of success?
- What is a belief or assumption you make about the world around you? How might you challenge this belief or assumption?
- Describe a role model you had growing up. What characteristics would you want to adopt, and how might you do that?
- What is a fear or insecurity that holds you back from doing your best? What is the first step you could take to address that fear or insecurity?

- Your favorite talk show host just invited your future self for an interview. Why were you invited, and what do you hope to talk about?

- If you could interview a famous historical figure (an artist, president, scientist, etc.), who would it be and what would you ask?

- What class in school is most difficult or overwhelming? What tools or systems could you use to stay on track with this class?
- What are some ways you waste time or distract yourself from what鈥檚 important? How might you refocus when you find yourself engaging with these distractions?
- In what ways do you organize your time effectively? What could you realistically do to better organize your time?
- Set five small and achievable goals for yourself when it comes to school work or hobbies.
Mental Health Prompts
Journal prompts can be an incredible way to tap into, understand, and release feelings and emotions. They are also an excellent way to practice and mindfulness.
Self-Love & Self-Appreciation
- Write down five things you love about yourself.
- Reflect on a time that you listened to your intuition, and it was the right move to do so. What did you learn about yourself?
- List ten challenging, fun, or useful things that your body can do that don鈥檛 depend on physical appearance.
- How can you be more compassionate towards your body, especially if you鈥檙e feeling especially self-critical?
- What are the signs your body gives when it needs rest, nourishment, or movement? How can you listen to those signs more effectively?
- What activities or practices help you feel connected to your body?
Mindfulness & Sensory Awareness
- Look out the window. What do you see?
- Close your eyes and listen to sounds around you. What do you hear?
- Close your eyes and pay attention to the sensations you feel in your body. What do you feel?
- Close your eyes and breathe deeply for a minute, focusing on your breath. Then write about how you feel.
Emotional Regulation & Coping Strategies
- When you鈥檙e stressed out, what are five things you can do to relax?
- When you鈥檙e angry, what are five things you can do to calm yourself down?
- When you鈥檙e sad, what are five things you can do to bring a bit of joy into your day?
- What are five ways you can take time for yourself and recharge?
- How can you conserve energy in a stressful period to keep from burning out?
Physical & Emotional Awareness
- How are you feeling today? Physically? Emotionally?
- What emotions did you experience today? Describe the ups and downs. How did you enjoy the ups and how did you get through the downs?
Reflection on Challenges & Growth
- Describe a difficult time in your life, and how you got through that time.
- Think of a challenge you have faced. What advice would you now give your past self while facing this challenge?
- How might you incorporate your passions and interests into your daily life to find more meaning or motivation?
- Describe a difficult decision you need to make. What are the fears or concerns related to this decision? Then, write the words, 鈥淲hatever I decide, I will be okay.鈥 Knowing this, what is your intuition telling you about this decision?
- Describe a time in the past when you had to make a difficult decision. How did you eventually come to a decision? How did you feel about the decision afterward?
- Think about a difficult situation you鈥檙e going through. What advice would you give to a friend going through something similar?
Connection & Relationships
- Who is someone you miss? What would you like to say to that person?
- Rant about something that someone did that annoyed or hurt you. Then, try to empathize with the person and self-reflect. Why might they have done this? Why might it have bothered you so much?
- Reflect on a difficult conversation you had with someone. How did you handle it?
- Think of someone who you feel drawn to. Perhaps they are especially confident, kind, or funny. What qualities do you admire about this person? What do you appreciate about your relationship?
- What are the most important relationships in your life? How can you strengthen them?
- How do you nurture your inner child? How can you tap into the curiosity, playfulness, and resilience of that inner child?
Gratitude Prompts
Similar to reflecting on your thoughts and emotions, writing about what you’re grateful for can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental health. The more we practice gratitude, the more of a natural response it will be, so feel free to assign gratitude journal prompts as often as you like.
Gratitude for Relationships
- Describe a kind or caring moment you had with a friend or family member.
- Write down five nice things that your friends have done for you.
- Write down five nice things that your family members have done for you.
- Describe a kind thing that your teacher has done for you or your class.
- Describe one of your friends. What do you appreciate about this friend?
- Write about someone in your family who you love. What do you appreciate about this family member?
- Write about a relationship that taught you an important lesson about yourself or about the world around you. What do you appreciate about this lesson?
- Choose a person in your life. How might you show gratitude towards that person today?
- What music artist are you grateful for? How has their music helped you?

Kindness and Acts of Giving
- What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? Why did you appreciate it so much?

- Think of a compliment someone has given you recently. How might you pass along that compliment?

Simple Joys and Daily Pleasures
- Describe the most delicious thing you ate today or yesterday.
- Describe your favorite fun or relaxing ways to spend a day that don鈥檛 cost a penny.
- Describe something that has recently made you laugh.
- Describe something that brings you joy.
- Think of a fond memory. Why is it so special to you?
- Describe a simple pleasure in your life. This could be anything from listening to a favorite song to jumping into cold water on a hot day to drinking a cup of tea in the evening.
- Describe one thing that happened today that you are grateful for.
- Describe something in your life that you feel 鈥渓ucky鈥 to have.
Appreciating Your Body and Senses
- What is an activity your body can do or a sensation your body can experience that you鈥檙e grateful for?
- When was the last time you felt a sense of awe? What inspired this feeling?
- How do you appreciate beauty in the world around you?
- Write down three small details you noticed today.
Personal Growth and Creativity
- In what ways are you creative? How do express creativity in your daily life?
- What is something quirky about yourself that you are proud of?
